Alpaca Shearing

Vic attended school in order to shear our own animals.  He saw a need in the industry which now takes him to four states during shearing season.

Using a table eliminates much of the stress to animals and is greatly preferred by owners once experienced.

Having had livestock our entire lives and four years of shearing for others, we know how important every aspect of your alpaca business is. Being prepared, scheduling adequate help and an agreeable work site makes for a successful shearing day.

Shearing Guidelines:

1. Make your shearing date early. Neighboring farms can share travel expenses if all your dates coincide.  Please determine to keep your appointment. Shearing season is short and requires a very tight schedule.  Every farm is a piece of the puzzle. (How would you feel if your shearer cancelled you for a larger farm and left you with unshorn animals?)

2. Schedule at least three dedicated workers to help, besides your shearer. Assign a particular person to handle fleece; it is your precious product from your lovely animals. Have on hand plastic bags to sort your fleece into first, second, and thirds, with containers to hold your bags. Give specific duties to helpers to alleviate confusion.

3. Have alpacas in catch pen and ready for their big day. They will need to be under cover if raining.

4. A level spot is needed for table and electricity available for clippers.

5. Shearing day is an exciting time for all of us. The more prepared and organized you are, the better It will be for all concerned.

TOENAIL TRIMMING and TEETH TRIMMING are available at time of shearing.

As your boys mature to breeding age they develop six extremely sharp fighting teeth. Points need to be removed to protect others in the herd.

Front teeth need to be kept trimmed close to palate to insure proper bite.

It is also necessary to keep toe nails cut to prevent deformity and for proper hygiene.
